Japanese origami cranes fly into Preston Church!
One thousand paper cranes have been lovingly folded by members and visitors to the Central Methodist Church in Preston.
Making a colourful impact flying up above customers in the Olive Grove Community Café, these origami birds are a talking point amongst the regulars drinking their morning coffee in the Lune Street café in the city centre.
Taking inspiration from Sadako Sasaki, a 12 year old Japanese girl who died from leukaemia following the Hiroshima bombing in World War II, the Preston origami folders wanted to create a visual prayer for peace that would be a talking point and a reminder of how we must strive to avoid the horrors of war.
The colourful cranes were folded over a period of 3 months and carefully strung up to create a cloud of colour and texture.
The Café is open Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 10am to 1pm where you can see this feat of folding above you, whilst enjoying a welcome drink in the café.

It’s was a great day back in November when the North West England Methodist District Probational Ministers and The President and Vice-President of the Methodist Conference, Revd Helen Cameron & Mrs Carolyn Godfrey visited.
All were very impressed with our cranes origami project which is underway and have taken a set of instructions, a few sheets of paper and will be adding to the display, as well as keeping us in their prayers!
